Lesley Arfin, author of “Dear Diary” and co-creator of http://thereal90s.tumblr.com asks an important question: “Why don’t people talk about Juliana Hatfield?” Like seriously, why? She changed Angela Chase’s life, people. She lit a candle for Rickie Vasquez, okay, so just remember that the next time you’re listening to Lisa Loeb. If you didn’t weep during her performance of “Make It Home” in So-Called Angels, I don’t know you. She was a lunch lady on The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Need I go on? Fine, I will. When she wasn’t guest starring in seminal 90s teen television, she was making kickass music and probably having lots of hot sex with indie rock heartthrobs. Not that that’s what is really important here, but STILL.
Juliana was (obvs) also on the September ‘92 issue of Sassy, already making her infinitely cooler than me when I was only five years out of the womb. Shit, now I’m depressed.
This is the third issue of Sassy I bought and it features a Cute Band Alert on Velocity Girl and Christina Kelly’s review of “Weetzie Bat,” which pushed me to pick up a copy 17 years later. Oh and it also features the best picture of Brendon Frasier wearing white socks you will ever see.
I had planned on getting a scanner and putting up some of the pages and we would all have an international Sassy Tumblr sleepover and do quizzes and eat junk food and listen to “Spin the Bottle” like when Rayanne, Angela and Rickie get ready for Rayanne’s house party and and and….but oops I have to save money to get into an apartment and buy food. Dude, being an adult totally SUX.
Anyway.
Stay sassy my babies.
