90s crush for your consideration: literally everyone in this video. I submit to you now the most important 90s video in existence: Bree Sharp’s “David Duchovny,” which would’ve been the greatest fan made compilation video ever except for the fact that it was a REAL SONG paired with an unnofficial video with appearances by Janeane Garofalo (!!!), Ally McBeal, Rosie O, the Lone Gunmen, Melissa Etheridge, Brad Pitt, love of my life Charles Nelson Reilly and the Duchovs himself, among many others. Since I know no one else will say it, this makes my 7th grade X-Files fanfiction look WEAK. And that stuff was pretty solid.

It could be the fact that I just watched all of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for the first time ever (I know, I KNOW) and I’m still fragile and considering suing Joss Whedon for emotional damage but the best 90s crush appearance in this has to be Sarah Michelle Gellar just hanging out in Giles’ library paying tribute to her fellow supernatural crime fighter. Can you feel it? The girl-90s just exploded and 10 zillion Lisa Frank dolphins and Dawson Leerys shot through the sky and blessed everyone with The Rachel supercut. I am crying! Love ya, SMG.

Kids Launch The Darndest Magazines of the Day: So apparently precocious style rookie Tavi Gevinson (who, you may enjoy being reminded, is only 14 years old) is starting a magazine with Jane Pratt, the founding editor of defunct cult teen magazine Sassy.

“Of course, it won’t be Sassy (or the rebirth of Sassy, or Sassy 2.0) and nor do we want it to be,” Gevinson writes on her blog. “For one, you can’t try to recreate something that good. For another, while I can read old issues of Sassy and relate, the world has changed a bit in the past 15 or so years, and that whole Internet thing happened, and this world calls for something different.”

Not-Sassy will have a “‘for the people, by the people’ kinda vibe,” Gevinson elaborates. “We want to find the best possible group of people for this project, and a wide range of ages, styles, etc.” That means you! Submission-resumes are currently being received through November 19th at MagazineSubmissionsAreFun@gmail.com.

In honor of election day or as I like to call it, let’s-piss-off-conservative-Christian-republicans-and-elect-a-gay feminist Wiccan-day, I’m flipping through my new election themed Sassy, the November ‘92 issue with none other than American hero Mayim Bialik on the cover. (You KNOW it’s my most prized possesh.)

This issue features a pretty amazing breakdown of party-lines by Mary Ann:

“If the Republican government were a grandpa, he would be the stern, somewhat distant kind who tells you to go fix your own bike. He might have a few spare coins in his pocket but thinks you’ll be a better person if you make your own cash. (What, are your legs broken? Go get a job!)”

Do you ever wonder if Rachel Maddow ever read Sassy? I do in these moments. And a lot of other moments. Mostly because she’s on my mind. A lot. (In my dreams where Sassy still exists she’s on every cover like Oprah. Just her, chilling out, reading, snarking on frat-boy politics. Maybe with an occasional friend like Chloe Sevigny or me or Janeane Garofalo.)

But the best, most keanu part of the entire issue is the final page listing “all the cool women running for congress,” with their voting record on abortion, death penalty, gay rights, health care and nuclear power.

I love Sassy because I got to keep this in mind today while casting my vote for my pro-choice liberal gurl Robin Carnahan, who just so happens to be running against a very sexist grandpa.

It’s October and you know what that means: non-stop Angela Chase fashion and Halloween movies all day, every day. One of my personal faves is “Ginger Snaps,” not only for its amazing dialogue (“I can see your gonch!”) but also because it poses as a werewolf movie when it’s actually about surfing the crimson wave. I love the idea of people sitting down for some sweet werewolf action and then bam: menses motherfuckers! Also I’m kind of creepy about period portrayals in film. I might actually support “Twilight” if it shirked romanticized emotional abuse for a few more menstruation allegories.

Honorable mention to “Teeth,” about a girl with vagina dentata. Yay vadge chompers and yay Halloween!

I was feeling depressed about Justin Bieber fanaticism and the teen girl dissing and girl-on-girl crime that will ensue, so I turned to Sassy.

Has fangirling really changed so much over the years? In my (and Angela Chase’s) humble opinion, teenage girls have always had the tendency to fall majorly butt-crazy in love with people they don’t know. Be it New Kids, Jordan Catalano, the Spice Girls, Josh, Kurt Cobain, the Sassiest Boy in America, or Ted from “Hey Dude.” We love/loved fast and hard. Sorry, it’s just the way we roll and still the way I roll today. Don’t be jealz of our devotion.

Now I guess a large portion of that devotion has been poured onto Justin Bieber. This is distressing, but also a natural progression. Do I think Bieber is worth the blood, Teen Spirit scented perspiration and tears of thousands upon thousands of teen girls who would be better off focusing their energy on perfecting their rock scream? No. Do I think Beiber is worth a box of Playtex Gentle Glide tampons? Fuck no. But I suppose someone has to cheer for the shitty bands to maintain balance in the universe.

Allow me to step on my Ms. Norbury soap box for a moment: What’s bothersome is the cruel comments lodged back and forth among girls over this boy, and how quick so many are to write it off as teen girls being “crazy bitches.” I think what we’re seeing in videos like this is internalized oppression, and it’s much easier to blame this behavior on Facebook/Twitter/teen girls being vapid airheads than to examine the real problem of systematic patriarchy.

Plus, you know, J. Beibz is no Sassiest Boy in America.
